Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”

– Hebrews 13

Why is it that our society celebrates greed, gluttony and lust? We absorb all sorts of material from the media today that suggest the love of money, wealth, success, fame, vengeance, and extramarital sex are things which are pleasurable and what you and I ought to yearn for. There is but an empty satisfaction to all these things. The love of money is never quenchable, because it is never enough for anyone. The love of sex outside of marriage will leave you used, emptied, and always fantasizing there is someone better. Revenge will only leave you with an enemy. If that person is destroyed or murdered, does that make them truly apologetic for what they have done? or are they only pleading for their life? What satisfaction should we get from vengeance? likely none at all. It is unending bloodshed and tears. But why do we yearn for such things? Do we hope for them to fulfill an empty void of satisfaction in our lives? The heart and mind often yearn for good things, for the sake of happiness, but our idea of what is good as humanity is often quite broken. We yearn for these things because we have both forgotten the Lord, but also have bought into the lie that God has also forgotten us.

James 1:17 says:

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

There is nothing more perfect and nothing more good than what God gives us, and nothing more true and right than God himself who never would, nor ever could forget us. If we believe in an Omniscient (all-knowing) God, then it is imperative for us to understand that you are never gone from his mind. It is not who he is. He is always, constantly, and consistently pursuing you. Is there anything more satisfying than to know that? Whether we are a believer or not, there is nothing more securing, assuring, or lovely than to know that there is someone who loves us so much that we are always on their mind, forever faithful, and in not even one instance would they turn their back on you. To know such a great love, would render all such things as wealth, success, fame, vengeance and all that turns our hearts hardened as valueless. There is nothing one could trade that would match up to the value of knowing that kind of friend is near.

Today, may you find complete assurance and satisfaction in remembering that you are not forgotten. You do not need to hold onto things because God is forever faithful. He is eternal in his love for you, and his grace stretches further than we could ever imagine. You are not forgotten, nor will you ever be.
