7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
1 John 4:7-12 (ESV)
The vastness of space seems to hold endless possibilities for exploration and discovery. As someone who grew up immersed in the worlds of Star Trek and Star Wars, I have always been captivated by the idea of venturing into the unknown. Recently, my son has developed a deep interest in all things related to space, which has reignited my own fascination with this subject.
We have been reading about the Mars expedition, and the sheer magnitude of the endeavor is mind-boggling. To reach the red planet, humans must travel a distance of 300 million miles, which would take almost seven months of traveling at a speed of 24,600 mph. The fact that we are capable of accomplishing such feats is nothing short of extraordinary.
However, the more we learn about the immense preparation that goes into these expeditions, the more we are struck by the question of why we go through all this effort. What drives us to spend billions of dollars and years of preparation? Perhaps we are constantly searching for something greater than ourselves, something that can only be found by exploring the universe around us.
This thought leads us to a deeper question: Why would God send His Son to save us, knowing that we would continue to live in sin? What motivates Him to go to such great lengths for us? The answer lies in His boundless love for humanity.
God’s love knows no bounds. He would traverse any distance, scale any height, and endure any suffering for our sake. His love is the most important thing to Him. It’s humbling to think that the creator of the universe would go to such lengths to show His love for us. Unfortunately, for many people, love is a word that carries disappointment and pain. They’ve been let down by those who promised to love them, and they carry the scars of that disappointment with them always. Yet, we all long for love – it’s a fundamental human need.
We go to great lengths to show our love for those who matter to us. We spare no expense in demonstrating how much we care for them. It’s in our nature to do so. This is because we were created from love, saved for love, by the one who is Love Himself: God, and God alone.
