3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.”
– Matthew 13:3-9
Have you ever received guidance from your teachers, peers, or parents and chosen to rebel or ignore their counsel? This experience is a familiar one, shared among many of us. We are naturally inclined to heed words that resonate with us, that make us feel affirmed. Yet, invariably, there are those who act in direct opposition to well-intentioned advice. I, too, have found myself in such a position, as have many of us, at some point in our lives. For some, this defiance stems from a deep-seated need for recognition or a desire to assert oneself, regardless of the correctness of their stance. While this may occasionally serve to make a statement, more often, it reveals our vulnerabilities.
Jesus addressed this very issue with His disciples and those gathered around, eager for miracles or knowledge they could use for personal gain. In this passage, Jesus emphasizes that the Word of God must penetrate our beings. It is not sufficient for it to remain at a superficial level or be treated merely as a set of moral guidelines or a means of behavioral adjustment. God’s Word is meant to deeply infuse our hearts. The fertile soil represents a profound love for God and an in-depth understanding of His love for us, shaping not only our actions but the essence of our beings.
Listening, as Jesus teaches, involves more than our physical sense of hearing. It calls for an attentive heart, applying His teachings with God’s love as our guide. Truly recognizing and embracing God requires a union of mind and heart.
As you engage with God’s Word today, may your comprehension of God’s grace delve beyond the mere text or spoken word. May it profoundly impact your heart and soul, enriching your relationship with the Divine.
