“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.”
– Ephesians 5:8-13
Today’s Scripture Reading: Ephesians 5:1-17
Shame is one of the darkest and most destructive places in human spirituality and psychology. It is as if we broke a bone in our body and refused to find help to heal it. What happens is that bone does not heal straight and leads to further complications to our health. It prevents us from living our lives freely and binds us to pain and agony which results in the deformity of that bone and ligament. But unless we are able to admit it, and bring it to light we are unable to truly heal from it. The shame of sin is darkly the exact same principle.
Have you ever washed a window after a long time of collecting dust and grime? Or a car that has been through dirt and the stains of the road? There is an ever so satisfying feeling of seeing what was one hazy and covered in brown, now bearing its true clarity and color. The shine and shimmer that comes from a freshly cleaned window, and the sparkle of paint on a car is of utmost refreshing emotion. It is when something is restored to how it was meant to be that we feel most relief.
This is what the Lord takes most desire in. To see one’s true creation and purpose shine out from within us. It is also of most satisfaction to him when he is able to wash away our sin, to bring it to light so that he may wipe clean. Is it because he is just simply a neat freak and tidy God? No, but because he gets to see what is truly you, and how he created you. Sin shrouds the true beauty of our God-formed humanity.
Today, be not afraid to bring to light before the Lord your deepest and most struggle-some sins so that he may begin to reveal what is truly meant to shine. His love for you desires to restore you to the greatest of your potential, and even the more frail of your insides to comfort you, but also so that he may demonstrate his power in you.
For he was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by the power of God.
2 Corinthians 13:4
