Today’s Scripture Readings: Isaiah 6:1-12, Proverbs 21
Have you ever thought about why we as humans were created by God to have mouths that speak, sing, shout, and even make noises? What is the function and the intention behind such a feature that we should develop articulate language and an ability to communicate much more than basic survival instincts? Although there are many anthropological reasonings which attempt to explain to us the reasons in a scientific manner, we know certain spiritual and social facts of what our vocalizations are capable of. It is capable of giving life to people around us through encouragement and verbal expressions of affirmation, or it can destroy somebody’s life through gossip and cursing. There is a great power to our speech. But why does it have so much power? It has power because our tongues were meant to bear the truth. Godly truth. Not truth of malicious intent, but truth that speaks the words of God. Whether for justice or for proclamation – we were meant to bear witness to his glory and grace.
As you read through the scripture today, reflect upon how we have been stewards of our tongues. Are they used to inflict pain on others? Have we used it selfishly and even too much when we should have been quick to listen instead? do we speak the truth in love? Have I used it to bear witness to the love of Christ? To speak words that express the gospel to others? Ask the Lord today to make your tongue holy; to put words on your lips which speak of His; and so that it would be used in a manner that honors him.
“If you had a thousand crowns you should put them all on the head of Christ! And if you had a thousand tongues they should all sing his praise, for he is worthy!”
