But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2:4-9 [ESV]
What is our worth to God? That is something that I have asked time and time again in the midst of my prayers and personal reflections. It is a puzzling proposition to believe that God would cherish us individually, out of the billions of people on this planet. It is even stranger to think that he would value our existence when we were merely made with dust.
The truth of the matter is our value has nothing to do with the very material or our achievements. If we have to make it simple, there is nothing we can do in this lifetime that will match up to the great deeds in which God continues to do every minute of the day. Our discoveries are merely uncovering the mysteries of what God has already done. If becoming a world famous baseball player that has set a world record of home runs is the definition of an achievement, it could not even come close to the magnitude of God’s creation of the Sun. Our goals and ambitions are merely worth the dust we came from.
But yet, God finds value in us. It is strange how we also find value in things that are not necessarily worth what they are made of. The other day, I was reading through Forbes magazine (forgive me) to see what the world’s richest people are up to lately. One of the past issues I picked up regarded one of the most expensive cars on the planet. A 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO that was last auctioned for $53,000,000. This makes absolutely no sense in any regard, and does not necessarily mean what the material and labor it cost to build it is worth. Some say it is the heritage, and the rarity of the car, but I digress. This comes to show where our value as human beings truly begin.
Our value begins with God. The creator of our lives is God, the most powerful and perfect being in all of existence. He values us and loves us because it is simple, we are his creation. Just as we care for our children, even more than our very own wellbeing, God cares for us. Whether or not we have achieved or done anything right to “earn” it. To prove it, he gives his own life for us to forgive our sins. Our value to God extends way beyond the material in which we are made of, and beyond which we make of ourselves.
Today, if you have been searching where your self-worth begins, it begins with Christ, and in Him alone. Reflect on that very truth and may the Lord continue to reassure you and speak to you personally about where you too, ought to put your worth in this life.
