18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight.
1 Corinthians 3:18-19
We live in a time and age where information is available to people at the click of a finger, and as easy as typing in a subject or word on your smartphone. It is available literally at your fingertips. There may also be a time to come when information will be able to be downloaded into one’s biological memory, and not only your phone. As scary as that sounds, information and the way we consume it is one of the key elements to our evolution as human beings. But just because we know all of what humanity has discovered, does not necessarily mean we have uncovered the greatest mystery of God and the purpose of our existence. In reality, just because we have read the bible ten times over may not mean we understand completely nor entirely how big the story of God’s relationship with humanity and the universe is.
There are moments in our personal experiences we were so sure of what was truly right and what was wrong. We have often thought we knew the correct way to do things, and what the proper color coordination for one’s outfit for the day should be. I am not stating that everything you thought was right or wrong should be compromised, but sometimes that becomes the end all and be all of the way we treat ourselves, the way we treat others, and even the way we have come to understand God altogether. We have lost touch with the doctrine of Grace.
As believers of a God that is much greater than we could image then, it ought to challenge us every moment and in every circumstance to think greater than our immediate understanding. This understanding of God’s greatness beacons on us to become even more humble, and to constantly be in a place of learning and submission to him. When we were so sure, and when we thought that we had all of our facts, perceptions, and interpretations correct, we ought to always look deeper and allow the gospel to speak even further down into the depths of our souls in which we still need saving of our sins, pains, and insecurities.
The universe is not just further out in space, but the depths of God’s creation also goes even deeper into one’s soul. Thus when we thought we knew and faced everything, be reminded that God’s wisdom and love stretches much further than we could imagine – even as far as knowing the things we could never admit, answer nor defend ourselves. It is only a matter of hearing, and taking the time to lay our pride and certainty down, and listen to how great His wisdom truly is.
