34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”
Luke 1:34-37
How challenging would this scenario be for most of us? To believe that a woman could be with child when she is a virgin would be preposterous, even for Mary. There is a brief moment that is recorded of Mary asking “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”, and this would be the natural human response to the things that seem most unnatural and impossible.
We often ask the same question in our lives… “how will this be?” and will justify that question by saying “since I am…” But do we believe in a God that goes beyond the facts of our current state, situation and status? The real question would be, are you ready for change? are you ready to receive what the Lord has prepared for you? The question that Mary asks is loaded. It is not just a matter of impossibility she has to wrap her head around, but is loaded with the concerns of “what happens after that?” or “what about Joseph? my marriage? my reputation?” There are so many implications to her accepting and receiving what the angel had told her as truth.
The question for us today is then, are we ready for the promises of God to come true? because when they do, we must also be prepared in faith to receive whatever is ahead of us, and trust that God is going to work all things out – not just what is in front of us, but all of the rest. We are often worked up about the details, but know that even the smallest to the greatest concerns, the Lord has it covered.
