7 Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. 8 For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God’s truth, so that the promises made to the patriarchs might be confirmed 9 and, moreover, that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy.

Romans 15:7-9

To accept one another is one of the most difficult things to do, especially when there are differences between us. It provokes and discomforts ones pride and convenience, and demands of us to give up our needs for those of someone else. It even at times requires us to lay down what we value and believe in, and show grace even when we fully disagree or as far as feel offended by that individual.

But how often have we put God into such a position? Most likely quite frequently if we are honest with ourselves. There was a huge difference between God and us. He was God, and we were mere created beings; God is holy, and we simply are not; Jesus loved us, while we persecuted him. But yet, God still accepts us – in our most sinful, broken and messed up state God receives and accepts us. Jesus was the Son of God, whom we ought to have worshipped as King over all the world, and ought to have served him. Instead, he came and served us by giving his life for us. But if we hear such a gospel and such news, how come it does not compel us to live as Jesus lived? Likely because we are busy and comfortable living for ourselves. That is where our heart and mind must begin to change.

To accept one another means we ought to serve one another, regardless of our difference in belief or background, and regardless of our offenses. To accept one another means we need to set aside our differences, and love for who they are – just as God had done with us.

Today, I hope we can begin there. That even though one may not approve of someone’s behaviors or decisions, the heart of acceptance and love would overpower and take precedence. When we are able to do that, is when God begins to shine and be known.
