7 For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. 8 If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. – Romans 14:7-8
In this journey we called life, there will always come a time where we face trials and challenges that bring out the worst of our fears, memories of failure, humility, and even death. There may also be times where there is much laughter, celebration, and relief… moments of utmost joy. At the end of it all, there is one virtue that we find ourselves coming back to – a need for sharing love. Though love itself is a key aspect of life, what is of real importance is that it is shared. Whether with a friend, a colleague, a family member, a lover. Relationships are one of the key aspects of human life and is a crucial part of our existence.
In a society where media and culture have portrayed independence, having no-strings-attached relationships, one-night stands, short term contracts, prenuptial agreements, and many other ideologies of modern living as a standard for life, the real question is this: can we truly live our lives alone and completely for ourselves? We have to be completely honest with ourselves when we ask that question.
Paul writes to us in the book of Romans: “none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone.” Even to this day, this is truth to the very depths of our spirit as humanity whether we believe in the Lord or not.
If God intended for us never to be alone, then today, there is news of greatest comfort to know that we were created and meant to live for the Lord; that His relationship with us is not conditional nor contractual. Our very existence is meant for God. How could that be comforting? No matter the circumstances, and no matter the adversity of one’s life, you are never, ever, alone.
We do not have to fear death, because even in death, we are never alone – with God you are destined to be in His company forever.
As you live today – may you remember the Greatness of God’s company and the unfailing faithfulness of His love and Grace on your life. May he give you peace and security today where you felt most fear and anxiety – that His presence may overcome and conquer all of them for you.
